Flexible Infrastructure aims to interchange information about the lanes provided to the traffic users according to the time of the day. It includes solutions such as reserved lane.

Participating actors in Flexible Infrastructure include vehicle drivers, who receive information, warnings and/o r guidance, road operators, who provide info on dynamic road signage, service providers who disseminate information, warnings and/ or guidance from road operator to vehicle drivers, and end-users as trip planners may use information, and expected delays caused by these, to optimize their trip planning.

 

The objective of Flexible Infrastructure is to inform traffic users about the lanes provided downstream of the current position and in the driving direction of the vehicle.

Business models

Taking into account various stakeholders’ views, a list of business model blueprints that address current or future challenges of urban areas, together with their operating and value-capture scenarios depicting the inner-workings of the business models, and the exchange of costs-benefits among stakeholders, have been created for the Flexible Infrastructure service.

Architecture
ITS-G5

In case of ITS-G5 communication technologies the Service Provider Back Office receives information about the lane status from the Data Provider Back Office. This information is distributed to the Roadside Unit through the Communication Provider Back Office. The Roadside Unit sends a MAPEM to the On Board Unit to inform the driver about the lane status. This information is distributed by the Vehicle to other Vehicles. In case that probe vehicle data are used, On Board Units sharing their information with the Service Provider Back Office through using the Roadside Unit and Communication Provider Back Office to reach Service Provider Back Office. That means the On Board Unit sends probe vehicle data to the Roadside Unit which need to aggregate this data before it forward this information through the Service Provider Back Office.

Cellular

In case of cellular communications the Service Provider Back Office is providing the lane status to a Personal Information Device through the Communication Provider Back Office to the Personal Information Device. Therefore, the Personal Information Device has to register itself at the Communication Provider Back Office.

Suppliers

Suppliers of components and solutions for the Flexible Infrastructure service include research institutes, such as CERTH-HIT, CTAG, as well as private companies, such as NeoGLS, IDIADA, Dynniq, Traffic Technique and Swarco.

Within the C-MobILE project the GLOSA service is implemented in seven Deployment Sites: Barcelona, Bordeaux, Copenhagen, Newcastle, North Brabant, Thessaloniki, and Vigo.

In Bordeaux the Green Priority service is implemented on a defined area containing five successive intersections approaching an hospital. The service provider is NeoGLS. In collaboration with Gertrude, when an RSU detects the presence of an equipped emergency vehicle, it forwards a priority request to the Traffic Light Controller, which will pass the lights to green at this traffic light, but also on the traffic lights ahead, to clear the way for the emergency vehicle until he reaches the hospital.
Barcelona

In Barcelona the Flexible Infrastructure service is implemented using cellular communication technology. This service covers the entries of Túnel de Vallvidrera, a tunnel connecting Barcelona with the surrounding cities in the north-west. Applus IDIADA is the service provider receiving information on reversible lanes and speed limits from the tunnel operator, Túnels de Barcelona i Cadí, and providing it to the drivers through an App.

In Bordeaux the Flexible Infrastructure service is implemented using both cellular and ITS-G5 communication technologies. This service is deployed in 3 zones, where information about the infrastructure is broadcasted to road users:

  • Indication of car pooling lanes
  • Indication of bus lanes on the ring road
  • Indication of open/closed lanes on Pont d’Aquitaine (in cooperation with DIRA)

The service provider for FI is NeoGLS and the service is available through the public application “CTD – Connected Mobility”.

Thessaloniki

In Thessaloniki the Flexible Infrastructure service is implemented to provide information about lane changes and closures due to road works. This information is provided by the Region of Central Macedonia (http://www.pkm.gov.gr/), which is responsible for the operation of the Traffic Management Center. The information is sent to the service provider, the Hellenic Institute of Transport (CERTH-HIT), which provides it to the drivers through their App (cmobile.imet.gr).
