Signal Violation Warning (SVW)
Signal Violation Warning aims to reduce the number and severity of collisions at signalised intersections by warning drivers who are likely -due to high speed- to violate a red light, or when another vehicle is likely to make a red light violation. This service aims to increase drivers’ alertness at signalised intersections to reduce the number of accidents or reduce the impact of accidents when the collision is imminent.
Participating actors in Signal Violation Warning vehicle drivers who receive red-light violation information on the in-vehicle display, road operator who may detect and signal the presence of a red-light violation, and service providers who disseminates the red-light violation information to vehicle drivers.
The objective of Signal Violation Warning is to provide timely in-vehicle driving assistance information on a signal violation downstream of the current position and in the driving direction of the vehicle.

Business models
Taking into account various stakeholders’ views, a list of business model blueprints that address current or future challenges of urban areas, together with their operating and value-capture scenarios depicting the inner-workings of the business models, and the exchange of costs-benefits among stakeholders, have been created for the Signal Violation Warning service.

Architecture
ITS-G5
In case of ITS-G5 communications, the Roadside Unit (RSU) receives information about the intersection state. This information is distributed to the On Board Unit (OBU), which can then determine a possible violation and warn the driver. The OBU shares the vehicle state to the RSU, then the RSU can determine the violation and distribute the warning to other vehicles. If the vehicle is not equipped with a OBU the RS recognizes the violation (e.g. with sensors, cameras) and provides this information to other vehicles.
Cellular
In case of cellular communications, the information is sent from the roadside system to the Traffic Management System (TMS), which provides data to service providers. Service providers will receive location data from the Personal Information Device (PID) and calculate possible violations. This information is sent as DENM over the communication provider to the PID.

Within the C-MobILE project the Signal Violation Warning service is implemented in five Deployment Sites: Barcelona, Bordeaux, North Brabant, Thessaloniki, and Vigo.

Barcelona
In Barcelona the Signal Violation Warning service is implemented using cellular communication technology. This service is combined with the GLOSA service, at the same intersections. Applus IDIADA is the service provider working with traffic light information from the traffic management centre of the City Council and warning drivers in case they are likely to drive through a red light, depending on their speed and location.

Thessaloniki
In Thessaloniki the Signal Violation Warning service is based on cellular communication technology. The service provider, the Hellenic Institute of Transport (CERTH-HIT), cooperates with local traffic lights operators (Traffic Technique and Swarco Hellas) for information exchange and provision of information to drivers through the CERTH-HIT App (cmobile.imet.gr).
